EVALUATION OF BATTALION OPERATIONS, PHASE 1

Abstract

A field experiment was conducted to evaluate performance of ROAD infantry and mechanized infantry battalions reinforced with armor. Effectiveness of control in planning and directing battalion maneuver elements and firepower resources were investigated. Mortar and DAVY CROCKETT platoon and battalion wire requirements were evaluated concurrently. The experiment consisted of four battalion exercises -- two infantry battalion and two mechanized infantry battalion. The full range of battalion combat was evaluated -- movement to contact, attack, defense, and retrograde operations. Field performance was analyzed to expose battalion capabilities and weaknessess, their causes and consequences.
