SURVEILLANCE TECHNOLOGY STUDY AND ANALYSIS. VOLUME II. THE PERFORMANCE OF AN ADAPTIVE LINEAR ARRAY OPERATING AGAINST COHERENT INTERFERENCE SOURCES.
Abstract
This report evaluates the performance of an adaptive array operating in a multipath environment, or equivalently, operating against coherent interference sources. The steady-state adapted pattern and the cancellation ratio, which is a measure of the interference rejection capability of the adaptive array, were calculated for the case of an adaptive array operating against N equal strength, completely correlated interference sources. Comparisons between the cancellation performance of the array operating against coherent and incoherent (independent) jamming sources were made. Recommendations for future effort are included. For the purposes of this analysis, a uniform line array of ideal isotropic elements was assumed. Furthermore, it was assumed that the array was fully adaptive (i.e., an adaptive loop on each element). The results of the analysis show that the adaptive array can cope with correlated interference sources. In fact, the higher the degree of coherence between the sources, the better the performance. The most significant conclusion of the report can be stated as follows: The interference rejection capability of an adaptive array operating against coherent interference sources is always equal to or greater than the interference rejection capability of the same array operating against incoherent interference. This holds regardless of the number or spatial distribution of the interference sources. (Author)
