INTEGRATED ENGINEERING AND SERVICE TESTS OF MEMBRANE, AIRFIELD SURFACING, WX-18.
Abstract
The Integrated Engineering and Service Test of Membrane, Airfield Surfacing, WX-18 was conducted by the US Army Armor and Engineer Board and US Army General Equipment Test Activity from 11 May 1966 to 15 November 1966. Field testing was conducted at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. The US Air Force Tactical Air Command and US Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station were participating agencies. The objective of the test was to determine whether the membrane met the requirements of the proposed qualitative materiel requirement and its suitability as a dustproof and waterproof assault runway surface at touchdown and turn areas. The test materiel satisfied the requirements of the QMR except as follows: resistance to adverse effects of exposure of weather; repairability under wet and dusty conditions; minimum weight; installation rate; and provision of suitable anchoring devices. It was concluded that the membrane does not meet all essential requirements of the QMR and is unsuitable as a dustproof and waterproof assault runway surfacing; and the membrane is safe for use by troops when prescribed precautions are adhered to. It was recommended that the WX-18 Membrane be considered unsuitable as a dustproof and waterproof assault runway surfacing for touchdown and turn areas in support of Air Force C-130 cargo aircraft pending correction or waiver of deficiencies; and that the deficiencies and as many as feasible of the shortcomings be corrected and modified membrane and accessories be furnished for check test.
