MERCURY-SENSITIZED PHOTOLYSIS OF PERFLUOROCYCLOBUTENE AND 1,3-PERFLUOROBUTADIENE.

Abstract

The mercury-sensitized photolyses of cyclo-C4F6 and 1,3-C4F6 were examined in the vapor phase. In the c-C4F6 system, the major product was 1,3-C4F6; in the 1,3-C4F6 system, c-C4F6. In both cases, an excited molecule is formed which can pass to a common intermediate structure. The intermediate reverts to 1,3-C4F6 about 86% of the time and to c-C4F6 about 14% of the time. The efficiencies of quenching the excited mercury atom, relative to N2O, are 0.71 and 1.38 for c-C4F6 and 1,3-C4F6, respectively. (Author)
