IMPROVED INTEGRAL SMOKE GENERATOR.

Abstract

Integral screening smoke generators were mounted on UH-1 helicopters in Vietnam to determine operational suitability and record methods for employment. The systems generated satisfactory smoke screens at all air speeds up to 90 knots and altitudes up to 50 feet. Though steady winds above 10 knots and gusts above 5 knots caused rapid dissenation, abrupt changes in terrain elevation caused difficulty in placing the smoke screen in the desired location, and multiple passes were usually required to sustain the desired density of smoke for the time required. Users considered the integral smoke generator to be effective in accomplishing its stated purpose under combat conditions in Vietnam. It is recommended that the integral smoke generator, with certain modifications, be adopted as a standard item for aviation units in Vietnam, on a basis of two per airmobile company or comparable unit.
