TURBINE GENERATOR DEVELOPMENT SNAP 50/SPUR PROGRAM.

Abstract

This report contains a summary of the design effort expended on a prototype potassium vapor turbine-generator unit. This prototype unit is similar in size and mechanical design details to a 300-kw concept proposed for the refractory-metal SNAP 50/SPUR program. However, it utilizes conventional steel, nickel, and cobalt alloys and only produces 120 kw of electrical power due to the turbine inlet temperature limit of 1600 F. Included in the report is a review of the design philosophy which evolved this configuration; the aerodynamic design of the turbine stages; selection of bearings and seals for the unit; lubrication and cooling techniques; stress and thermal analysis of the unit; and a fabrication plan for the unit. Detail drawings of the rotating group components were completed and are included in this report. (Author)
