CARRIER POSITION MODULATION EXPLORATORY DEVELOPMENT MODELS.

Abstract

This report describes the development of Carrier Position Modulation (CPM) exploratory development equipment. The basic theory of the CPM technique, system considerations, equipment circuitry, and equipment evaluation are discussed in detail. The purpose of this program was to develop exploratory breadboard equipment using Carrier Position Modulation for USAECOM laboratory analysis to establish the merits of CPM in comparison with other modulation techniques. The program has resulted in the design and construction of a CPM transmitter and receiver; each a self-contained battery powered unit. The units are sufficiently rugged that they may be utilized in actual field tests as well as laboratory analysis. Preliminary evaluation of the equipment indicates that the CPM technique offers significant advantages over standard narrow-band Frequency Modulation in the areas of increased transmission capability (system gain) and spectrum conservation.
