TRANSIENT HEAT TRANSFER MEASUREMENT WITH THIN-FILM RESISTANCE THERMOMETERS -- FABRICATION AND APPLICATION TECHNOLOGY.

Abstract

A detailed description is presented of the fabrication details of a variety of thin-film resistance thermometers used for heat transfer measurement in Cornell Aeronautical Laboratory (CAL) short-duration test facilities. A discussion is included of the electrical and thermal properties of the composite film-substrate gage together with a review of the calibration procedures involved. Heat transfer gage circuitry, signal conditioning, and data analysis are described. Current state-of-the-art applications of thin-film heat transfer gages in hypersonic testing are discussed. Where practical, test data are correlated with applicable theory to define the range of application of such thin-film heat transfer gage measurements and to note the limitations as well. (Author)
