ADVANCED FIBER-REINFORCED TUNGSTEN NOZZLE.

Abstract

A previously-developed, molybdenum fiber-reinforced tungsten material was improved by the utilization of more closely controlled tungsten powder particle sizes and TZM molybdenum fibers. The material contained 30 volume percent fibers and was fabricated by hot pressing. The physical and mechanical properties of the material were measured and used for design of a full-scale nozzle insert. The full-scale nozzle design incorporated complete thermal analysis and a unique elastic-plastic stress analysis with a demonstration of unusual predictability. The nozzle was tested in the Atlantic Research 36-inch motor using APG 114 gel fuel with a theoretical flame temperature of 6800 F at a pressure of 700 psi. Test duration of 30 seconds resulted in partial ejection due to a non-uniform overlay. The firing demonstrated the capability of the molybdenum-reinforced tungsten to function as in insert material in the developed design under the test conditions.
