MOBILE PIPE MILL.

Abstract

This Technical Information Report covers the first phase of the development of a mobile pipe mill to produce pipelines for petroleum products in the field in support of military operations. It is to produce 8-inch and 12-inch welded pipe at the rate of 40 feet per minute from coils of flat steel (skelp). The mill will operate over flat and rolling terrain and will be used to construct pipelines in excess of 100 miles in length. A high-frequency electric resistance welder is the crucial element in the process. Trucks, bulldozers, a skelp loader, pipelayers, and similar equipment are required for pipe-making and pipe-laying operations. Development of a prototype mill by the Army will await the results of current experimentation with a commercial mill and of studies now in progress. (Author)
