BEHAVIOUR OF NEURONES IN AREA AII OF THE Z(UNANAESTHETIZED)ZAUDITORY CORTEX OF THE CAT.

Abstract

Records have been made from single units in the 'secondary' auditory cortex (mainly from A2) in the cat. On the basis of a sample of 58 units the proportions of 'noise' units, of tone responders, and of frequency-modulated-tone responders does not differ significantly from that found in A1. Regressions of position on frequency and vice-versa do not show any strong correlation (correlation coefficient = 0.4). The trend is from high frequency anteriorly to low frequency posteriorly (i.e. in the same direction as A1) but the slope of the regression differs from zero only at the 2.5% level of significance. Many A2 units have latencies as short as 15 milliseconds. As in A1, the response of a unit to a given stimulus is not invariant.
