HIGH POWER MICROWAVE COMPONENTS IN OVER-SIZED WAVEGUIDE.

Abstract

The purpose of this investigation was to develop components for ultra-high power microwave systems employing oversize waveguides for which the cross sectional dimensions are in the range between 1.5 to 2.25 free space wavelengths. The design goals were to develop components capable of carrying 5 megawatts of peak power and 100 kilowatts of average power at X-band, and which produce spurious mode amplitudes which are less than -25 db over at least a 5% frequency bandwidth. Experimental work was performed at X-band with 2.8 inches x 2.5 inches rectangular waveguide. Experimental results are presented for various microwave components and for an oversized rectangular waveguide resonant ring. The results show that a ring can be built with low mode conversion loss, and that the dominant mode can be resonated without appreciable effects being experienced from spurious modes. (Author)
