DETERMINATION OF THE 500-MB CIRCULATION OVER NORTHERN HEMISPHERIC OCEANS FROM SATELLITE AND CONVENTIONAL SURFACE MEASUREMENTS.

Abstract

The 500-mb circulation was determined over the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans by two procedures. One procedure used a combination of statistical relationships developed with satellite window radiation measurements determined during the course of the study, satellite nephanalyses, conventional surface data, and climatological information at the 500-mb level. The other procedure was based on a statistical relationship between a parameter derived from the window radiation measurements and meridional flow. Eighteen synoptic situations on fifteen dates were analyzed by both procedures with TIROS 7 as the satellite data source from July, 1963 to May, 1964. At least four synoptic situations occurred in each season. The first procedure produced striking results. Objective rules for estimating height anomalies from the climatological normals were developed from the established statistical relations, the nephanalyses, and the surface data. Numerical height errors of 56 meters compared favorably with 84 meter errors with climatology as the diagnostic tool. (Author)
