PROJECT MAGNET AND COSMIC RAYS.

Abstract

The history of cosmic rays began at the turn of the century when Victor F. Hess made his historic balloon ascent giving the first strong evidence that radiation comes from outside the earth. Further investigators proved the incoming particles were charged and would behave uniquely in the earth's magnetic field; namely, latitude effect, east-west effect, and the Van Allen radiation belts. Project MAGNET began to observe cosmic rays in 1958 with a neutron monitor. The detection system was later expanded to include a meson telescope. An aircraft has proven to be an excellent platform to measure cosmic radiation simultaneously with the magnetic field. (Author)
