STRUCTURAL CHARACTERISTICS OF NFSS BUILDINGS. VOLUME IV - ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO.

Abstract

The statistical frequencies of occurrence of selected structural attributes in a sample of National Fallout Shelter Survey (NFSS) buildings in five cities are reported in five volumes as follows: Volume I, Providence, Rhode Island; Volume II, New Orleans, Louisiana; Volume III, Detroit, Michigan; Volume IV, Albuquerque, New Mexico; and Volume V, San Jose, California. The structural characteristics of the buildings analyzed include: floor area, number of stories, total building height, foundation, substructure, exterior walls, apertures, frame, roof, floors, and interior partitions. These data, in a statistical sense, provide a basis for determining the blast resistance of fallout shelter buildings. A sufficient number of buildings was surveyed in each city to give a relative standard error of approximately twenty percent for an estimate of an attribute which occurs in twenty-five percent of the buildings in each city. The areas surveyed were the Standard Metropolitan Statistical Areas (SMSA's) for the five cities named above. Special facilities (tunnels, caves, etc.) and buildings where licenses have been refused were excluded from consideration. A random sample of buildings to be surveyed was selected from the remainder of the NFSS buildings in the SMSA. The data were collected from building plans, specifications, Sanborn Maps, and building codes, etc. A visit was then made to each building site to verify these data and to obtain any additional information. A brief summary of the most pertinent results observed for each structural detail is given in each volume.
