A LINEAR FILTER THEORY FOR PLANE TRANSPARENT ARRAYS.

Abstract

Properties and formulae for the description of Linear Multibeam Plane Directional Systems are derived for both monochromatic and broad-band sound fields. It is shown that for monochromatic fields the spatial structure and the spatial processing can be considered as two cascaded linear filtering operations. The case of circular arrays, to which the optimization principles of time-domain linear filters can be extended, has been particularly studied. An easy method for the synthesis of a specified directivity pattern is also shown. Broad-band sound field conditions are examined in less detail. However, it is shown that around the main lobe the directivity pattern obtained with monochromatic fields is still valid, but that there is generally a smoothing of the side lobes in directions far from the main lobe.
