INFRARED SPECTRA OF THERMALLY TREATED POLY-2, 2'(M-PHENYLENE)-5,5'-BIBENZIMIDAZOLE AND SEVERAL RELATED MODEL COMPOUNDS.
Abstract
The effect of thermal treatment on the polybenzimidazole polymer system has been studied with the major emphasis on the polymer poly-2,2'(m-phenylene)-5,5-bibenzimidazole and several model compounds, benzimidazole, 2-phenylbenzimidazole and 2,2-diphenyl-5,5-bibenzimidazole. Infrared spectroscopy was employed with supplemental data supplied by mass spectrometry and differential thermal analysis. A high temperature evacuable infrared cell was designed and built as part of the project. Two absorption bands were observed to vary with increased thermal treatment and these may find usefulness in determining the early stages of degradation. (Author)
