TANK-MOUNTED INSULATION PROGRAM.

Abstract

This report describes a program whose objective is to furnish a test device to be used for the experimental comparison of shroud- and tank-mounted insulation systems. The test device is an 8-ft-diam, government-furnished, stainless-steel tank and shroud which was modified, and then insulated with NRC-2 material. This report presents system analysis of tank-mounted NRC-2 and shroud-mounted Dimplar insulation systems. Also, a performance analysis for these two systems is shown. The design, fabrication, instrumentation, and installation of the NRC-2 tank-mounted system is described in detail. A proposed test plan is also presented. The device, which will use liquid hydrogen as a test cryogen will be tested in the Edwards Air Force Base Space Simulation facility to obtain experimental data for the comparison of shroud- and tank-mounted insulation systems.
