MAGNETIC EFFECTS IN THE PLASMA OF A LOW-PRESSURE ARC DISCHARGE.

Abstract

Deformation of the arc column and magnetic blowing of low-pressure arc discharges in transverse magnetic fields are investigated. Photographs of such arcs show that the magnetic field has about the same deformation effects on the shape of the arc column as a wind which blows against the column. Satisfactory agreement between a previously proposed model of a low-pressure arc in a transverse magnetic field and photographs of such an arc was obtained only after vaporization of the electrodes was included in the consideration.
