THE LATTICE PARAMETERS OF TITANIUM AT CRYOGENIC TEMPERATURES.

Abstract

The lattice parameters of high purity electrolytic titanium (less than 75 BHN), commercially pure titanium, and Ti-4Al alloy were measured over a temperature range from 4.2 K to 300 K using x-ray diffraction techniques. Both the 'a' and 'c' lattice parameters were found to decrease uniformly from 300 K down to 100 K. From 100 K to 4.2 K the 'a' parameter continues to decrease at a reduced rate and the 'c' parameter remains constant. The development of a technique for the accurate and rapid determination of changes in lattice parameters with temperature was a special goal of this study and a simplified method of computing lattice parameters is presented.
