PROCESSING PARAMETERS FOR DIFFUSION-BONDED ALUMINUM-BORON FILAMENT COMPOSITES.

Abstract

Diffusion-bonded unalloyed aluminum-boron filament composites were fabricated and tested to determine effective processing conditions. Composites were fabricated using various reinforcement and foil preparations by bonding in air at temperature of 700 to 1,000 F, under pressures to 80,000 psi, for times of 10 minutes to 1 1/2 hours. Highest strengths were obtained by first cleaning the foil surfaces and then bonding at 800 F, at 50,000 psi, for 1 1/2 hours. The reinforcement was observed to fail at a stress considerably below its average strength and the matrix to fail above its ultimate strength. (Author)
