PERMANENT TUBE JOINT TECHNOLOGY.
Abstract
Design of a system for installing welded fittings in thick wall tubing ranging from 1-to 16-inches in diameter was completed. Five orbital carriages were designed to support and provide a rotary platform for both machining and welding heads. Two of the carriages were fabricated and performance tested. Universal machining and welding heads adaptable for use with the orbital carriages were designed, fabricated, and performance tested. Design of a tube weld variable programer including weld current servocontrol and arc voltage controlled wire feed systems was completed; fabrication of two units was initiated. Welding and weld joint preparation studies were conducted for 6061-T6 aluminum and 347 stainless steel tubing in the 3-to 16-inch OD range, and for 21Cr-6Ni-9Mn stainless steel, Inconel 718 nickel base alloy, commercially pure titanium and 6Al-4V titanium alloy, and 2219 aluminum alloy in the 1/4- to 3-inch OD range.
