RESEARCH TO OPTIMIZE THE FILAMENT-WOUND TOROIDAL TIRE TO PROVIDE PERFORMANCE TO TESTS OF SPECIFICATION MIL-T-5041D AT MINIMUM WEIGHT.

Abstract

This work was undertaken as a continuation of Contract AF 33(615)-2315 to improve the design of a Type VII (extra-high pressure) filament-wound aircraft tire in order to fabricate a tire of reduced weight which would meet the test requirements. Presented are the design changes and fabrication procedures for a 30 x 7.7, 12-ply rating (6-ply actual), Type VII aircraft tire. Twelve tires were fabricated. Five tires were tested to the requirements with varying degrees of success. One tire completed the full test cycle of a 2-mile taxi at 30 mph, 50 dynamometer landings at 200 mph and 100 low-speed landing cycles. A weight reduction of 17-20% (compared to conventional tires) has been attained. Four tires are available for additional testing as dictated by the Air Force Materials Laboratory. Detailed test results are presented and compared with data obtained from a standard tire of the same type. (Author)
