TESTS OF RAPIDLY PREPARED REMOTE SITES WITH P.1127 VTOL AIRCRAFT.
Abstract
The results of operational testing of a unique VTOL aircraft site preparation concept are presented. Two rapid site test pads were prepared in Norfolk, England and supporting flight tests were conducted by the Tri-Partite Kestrel Evaluation Squadron. The material, a chlorinated polyester resin with high-temperature ablative additives and fiberglass reinforcement, was transported to the remote area site and applied directly to the soil by specially designed equipment. Site preparation required four to five hours and landing of the P.1127 aircraft was programmed for one hour after completion. The ability of the rapid site material to withstand the temperature, blast, and loading stresses clearly indicates its feasibility for operational use with VTOL aircraft. (Author)
