INVESTIGATION OF MAINTENANCE-FREE HIGH RATE, NICKEL-CADMIUM BATTERIES FOR AIRCRAFT APPLICATION.

Abstract

Charge acceptance of sealed nickel-cadmium batteries to a fixed voltage was determined at temperatures from +20 F to -40 F. The high rate charge-discharge behavior of polypropylene separators in sealed cells was investigated from 0 F to 140 F. Battery packaging designs were examined and the one with minimum size and weight was selected. A detailed description of the logic circuit elements and their functions is presented. Thermal tests on the boost module are described. A summary of flight test data on a UH-1(U)F helicopter is presented. (Author)
