FLUID FLOW CHARACTERISTICS THROUGH ORIFICES IN ENCLOSED ROTATING DISKS.
Abstract
The discharge coefficient of an orifice is reduced when the orifice is placed in a rotating disk. The orifice velocity, orifice configuration, and pressure differential across the disk were investigated as some of the parameters resulting in the reduction. Graphical results of the discharge coefficient and a nondimensional speed parameter, based on orifice location and disk speed, are presented for various orifice configurations. Studies were conducted with air and water media. Periodic fluctuations of the swirling water flow were indicated by photographic studies. A flow restricting baffle inserted into the water produced similar discharge coefficient characteristics due to cavitation. (Author)
