ENGINEER DESIGN TEST OF AIR CONDITIONERS, HORIZONTAL, COMPACT, 36,000 BTU/HR, 60- AND 400-CYCLE (CATEGORY II).
Abstract
This report summarizes the engineer design subtests of the 60- and 400-cycle 36,000 Btu/hr horizontal compact air conditioners conducted at Aberdeen Proving Ground from 24 January 40 30 June 1967. The test was conducted in accordance with procedures set forth in a USATECOM approved engineering plan of test for this type of materiel and included humidity tests on two 60-cycle units, sound level tests on a 60- and a 400-cycle unit, radio interference suppression tests on a 60- and a 400-cycle unit, a sand and dust test on a 400-cycle unit and a salt fog test on a 400-cycle unit. No detrimental effects were found due to the salt fog or the sand and dust test and the readings taken during the radio interference tests were below the specified levels. The humidity tests resulted in a burned out condenser fan motor on both units and the measured sound levels on both units were greater than specified levels. It was concluded that the models tested met the requirements for radio interference suppression, salt fog protection, and sand and dust protection but did not meet the requirements for sound level abatement and for humidity protection. Recommendations are included for sound level abatement, correction of the motor burnout problem, and retesting. (Author)
