INVESTIGATION OF THE DUCTILITY OF MODIFIED TZC ALLOY. CORRELATION BETWEEN EXTRUDABILITY OF INGOT MATERIAL AND HIGH STRAIN RATE TENSILE TESTS.
Abstract
An investigation was conducted as a continuation of a program aimed at the development of a simple inexpensive laboratory test for determining the extrudability of ingot materials. A pneumatically operated test machine, capable of delivering tensile forces at very high loading rates without overload or cyclic loading was utilized. Tests were performed in vacuum at temperatures from 2800 to 4000 on specimens taken from cast ingots of modified TZC molybdenum alloy in various conditions of heat treatment. A high speed deflectometer, developed during the previous phase of the program, was used to obtain time-deformation and stress-strain curves for the study of deformation characteristics. The data are compiled in tabular form and various plots are presented. Representative microstructures are included and discussed, as are typical oscillograms from constant load and tensile tests. Ductility--deformation rate--temperature relationships observed for the modified material were not unlike those previously determined for the TZC alloy. (Author)
