LOW ORDER MODELS OF DYNAMIC SYSTEMS AND THEIR USE IN CONTROL.

Abstract

This report presents the results of an investigation into methods for obtaining low order models of linear time invariant dynamic systems and their use in control. Particular attention is directed to models which are obtained by manipulating the differential equations of the system. In order to improve the models' steady state response approximation to the system, several variations of the modeling method were investigated. It was found that improved steady state response is obtained, either at the expense of transient response performance or by the requirement for an initial offset in the model state variables which is dependent on the initial control variable. Design limitations on application of the modeling procedures are suggested. The use of low order models of dynamic systems for designing system controllers was investigated and the results are presented. It was found that those modes of the system ignored in the modeling procedure can lead to instabilities in the controlled system. (Author)
