OPTIMUM COHERENT OPTICAL RECEIVER TECHNIQUES.

Abstract

The development of a new wide bandwidth image dissector which was initiated during a previous program was completed during this program together with the design and construction of a breadboard tracking optical receiver. The development of this new image detector has extended the state-of-the-art in high time resolution camera tubes significantly so that microwave information bandwidths are now possible in an optical radar receiver together with the electronic tracking capability. The new image dissector was evaluated in a breadboard optical receiver operating outside the laboratory. The experimental evaluation included a demonstration of coherent detection over a relatively wide field of view and measurements of the effect of receiving aperture size upon signal-to-noise ratios. The pointing accuracy of the tracking system was evaluated by means of the coherent detection experiments and the well known directional properties of coherent optical detection. (Author)
