MEASUREMENT OF THE LENGTH OF A CENTRAL OR EDGE CRACK IN A SHEET OF METAL BY AN ELECTRICAL RESISTANCE METHOD.

Abstract

The change in length of an edge or central crack in a metal sheet can be obtained by measuring the change in electrical resistance of the sheet containing the crack. This paper gives the theory of the method and the results of a computer programme designed to provide detailed calibration curves. The method has been used to measure crack propagation rates during fatigue and the experimental procedure is described. (Author)
