FREQUENCY AGILE CIRCUIT TUNER STUDY.

Abstract

A study was conducted to determine the practicability of high speed electronic tuning by applying a control current to set the inductance of a ferrite core in a HF amplifier tank circuit. Through a concurrent ferrite survey and measurement program, suitable ferrite materials were sourced. Appropriate amplifier design methods and criteria were established, and a scale model amplifier was constructed and tested, with the ferrite operating in and over the same range of magnetic and electrical conditions required in a high power amplifier design. The design of a one megawatt pulsed HF amplifier was created. Measurements of the ferrite and scale model amplifier performance provide evidence that a linear amplifier with 50% efficiency covering a tuning range of at least 5-30 MHz is feasible. A relationship between efficiency and tuning speed was identified and found to vary with different ferrite materials. It is expected that more efficient ferrites will be developed which will permit greater tuning range and tuning speed in the millisecond range. (Author)
