ADVANCED DATA CONVERTER TECHNIQUES INVESTIGATIONS.

Abstract

A study was performed to explore the feasibility and practicality of utilizing advanced techniques (thin film memories, delay lines, disc storage, integrated circuits, etc.) in digital-to-video conversion equipment for presenting computer generated data in a television format. The study program was divided into various phases listed as follows: (1) Digital-to-Video Converter Concepts Study Phase. The bit per element and real time converter techniques were investigated during this phase. The effect of single channel and multi-channel output, various line scan rates, display formats, size and number of symbols and vectors on the operating characteristics of the various major units (circuits and memories) for the various converter configurations were determined; (2) Device Investigation Phase. This phase of the study was concerned with investigating devices such as thin film memories, delay lines, disc memories, integrated circuits and other devices and components that may be used in a converter; (3) Computer Adapter Unit Study Phase. This phase of the study defined the adapter unit required to interface a digital-to-video converter with a computer which has characteristics similar to the DDP-116 or SDS-930; (4) Practical Converter Design Phase. Based on the results of the previous three study phase, specifications for a converter were decided upon jointly with RADC. A design for a converter meeting these specifications was carried out to the functional block diagram level with sufficiently detailed logical design to substantiate the approach chosen.
