RESEARCH ON RELAXATION PROCESSES IN MAGNETIC MATERIALS.

Abstract

The influence of magnetic inhomogeneity (spatial variation of the local saturation magnetization) upon the properties of magnetic materials has been investigated. Measurements were carried out on polycrystalline yttrium iron garnets of varying, and generally fairly large, porosity. Data are presented concerning the static magnetization as a function of dc field-strength, the differential susceptibilities at microwave frequencies with rf field applied either parallel or perpendicular to the dc field ('longitudinal' and 'transverse' susceptibilities) and the instability threshold under parallel pumping. A general theory has been developed from which these same quantities can be calculated.
