RESEARCH TEST OF CARTRIDGE, 90-MM, TP-T, M353E1 (SAFETY INVESTIGATION).

Abstract

A research test of the 90-mm, TP-T, M353E1 cartridge was conducted at APG from 12 June to 19 July 1967 to investigate blast pressure, carbon monoxide, and particle blowback as possible causes of nausea and headaches to instructors at the US Army Armor School engaged in observing crew-training exercises during firing of the cartridge in the M48 tank. No complaints were reported when control cartridge, 90-mm, TP-T, M353 was used for training. The test consisted of firing alternate groups of five rounds each of the M353 and M353E1 cartridges from various combinations of M48 series tanks and recording the data. Results show no significant difference between the two cartridges in the areas tested. It was concluded that the muzzle-blast overpressures (both cartridges) are excessive at the positions recorded; the CO concentrations measured were not hazardous; the recovered foreign particles blown back were attributed to the cartridge and were not hazardous, but the possibility exists that blast from adjacent tank firings could blow back foreign particles from the ground surface that may be hazardous. It was recommended that the instructors use adequate protective devices and that the spacing between adjacent tanks be increased during the training firings. (Author)
