RESEARCH ON INTERMETALLIC COMPOUNDS.

Abstract

Laboratory effort was directed toward producing pure, nonporous samples of selected intermetallic compounds in the molybdenum-aluminum, molybdenum-germanium, molybdenum-selenium, and molybdenum-tellurium systems. Although samples of the desired phases were not produced, the data gathered indicate the following: (1) MoAl2 does not exist; (2) Mo3Se4 and Mo3Te4 are the equilibrium phases between molybdenum and MoSe2 and MoTe2, respectively; (3) MoSe3 and Mo2Se5 cannot be produced in pure forms by the published wet chemical method. The crystal structure of MoAl3 is reported to be C-centered monoclinic with a = 9.64 A, b = 3.57 A, C = 10.3 A, and beta = 109 degrees.
