FABRICATION OF ULTRATHIN SOLID ELECTROLYTE BATTERIES.
Abstract
During this quarter preliminary experiments in the fabrication of ultrathin Pt/AgI/Ag cells were conducted. The platinum and silver electrodes were vacuum deposited as ultrathin films of approximately 1000 A, and the AgI layer was several microns thick. Sputtering was used for the platinum deposition. The Ag and AgI layers were deposited by direct evaporation, although the sputtering technique could be applied to them as well. As part of this work a CVC AST-100 sputtering unit was installed and adapted to a vacuum system. Several methods for making electrical contacts between the thin film electrodes and the measuring instruments were also investigated, and, in addition, the circuit system used in the tests was designed. Experiments with pellet-size Pt/AgI/Ag cells were conducted to gain a better understanding of the state-of-the-art in existing batteries, and then vacuum evaporated cells were successfully fabricated using a new nonoverlapping cell format which permitted evaluation of the ion conductive properties of evaporated AgI. Finally, the idea of making electrical measurements in the vacuum system during the actual preparation of the thin-film cells was introduced and reduced into practice. This work included some preliminary experiments with AgBr, which offered a better means of studying the behavior and properties of the thin-film systems. (Author)
