MULTICOLOR EL DISPLAY DEVELOPMENT.

Abstract

This report describes the development and fabrication of a random access, multicolor, electroluminescent, solid state display device capable of information readout in six colors plus white. Investigations of various materials and fabrication techniques were conducted in order to present a workable unit. Measurements of the spectral output and efficiency of fluorescent materials and phosphors were taken to insure the highest color brightness output. Since the multicolor information is light piped to the viewer, plastic substrate materials were examined for piping efficiency. The contract was completed with the delivery of two multicolor, solid state modules having a resolution of 100 multicolor elements in a one square inch viewing surface; the 2-1/4 inch modules were essentially gapless. A programmed switch was used to demonstrate the capability of the display which was driven by 250v at 2000 cps.
