NEW METHODS LEADING TO HIGH EFFICIENCY IN TRAVELING-WAVE TUBES.
Abstract
This is the final report of a one-year study designed to investigate 'New Methods Leading to High Efficiency in Traveling-wave Tubes.' This report enunciates the principle of the Positive Taper Traveling-wave Tube which was pioneered over the course of this study. This tube has achieved a best beam efficiency of 42 percent and a best-depressed collector efficiency of 52 percent. It has demonstrated its ability to run better than 49 percent efficient over a bandwidth greater than 10%, with 25 dB of small signal and saturated gain at the 20-watt level. The amplifier has also demonstrated that it is very linear when operating under those conditions which yield the best efficiency. The principle is demonstrated theoretically as well as experimentally. Other tubes built and tested during the program are also reported. They include a short attenuatorless traveling-wave tube, separated circuit two helix tubes and conventional uniform helix traveling-wave tubes. (Author)
