IMPROVED DETECTION AND IDENTIFICATION OF INCAPACITATING AND LETHAL AGENTS.

Abstract

During this reporting period, emphasis was placed on the development of reagents for the detection of organophosphorus-type agents. In this regard, second order Beckman reactions were studied in an effort to develop compounds that cleave to give detectable fragments. Oximes that cleave to give highly colored triaryl dyes or odoriferous mercaptans were investigated. Tris(4-dimethyl-aminophenyl)acetal-doxime was synthesized and shown to give the crystal violet color in the presence of p-toluenesulfonyl chloride and a number of Lewis acids. Desylamylthioether oxime did not, however, appear to liberate the mercaptan odor under similar conditions. (Author)
