EPITAXIAL GROWTH OF METALLIC FILMS.
Abstract
Single-crystal films of gold and silver in (001) orientation were deposited upon sodium chloride cleavage surfaces. The resultant film structures were determined by transmission electron diffraction techniques. Irrational reflections resulting from double diffraction at twin boundaries and stacking faults were observed. The minimum substrate temperature necessary for complete epitaxy was found to be dependent upon the deposition rate. The condensation coefficients for specific film-substrate combinations were determined to be a function of the substrate temperature and deposition rate. A technique for depositing single-crystal films upon dissimilar single-crystal films was also developed. (Author)
