Investigations of High-Power Beam Plasma Interactions

Abstract

This research is directed toward the investigation of high-power beam plasma interactions, with specific investigation of the transverse velocity beam modes called for. The dispersion relation for electrostatic waves propagating at an oblique angle to the magnetic field was calculated. Strong damping occurs unless the axial wavelength is at least one or two orders of magnitude greater than the perpendicular wavelength. In experiments with the modulated-beam apparatus, it was found that the electrostatic waves are excited more strongly as the transverse energy of the beam is increased. Experiments are being carried out to obtain a quantitative measure of the transverse energy of an electron beam.
