STUDY OF WATER SOLUBLE RESIDUE FLUXES.

Abstract

The field of water soluble residue fluxes was surveyed, with both types being considered: water solvent and mixed solvents. Representative manufacturers were contacted and samples obtained, together with manufactures' published data. These samples were tested for type of active ingredient, efficiency of fluxing, effect on insulation resistance of printed wiring test patterns and ease of removal from soldered boards. A short term test method was developed for determination of completeness of removal of flux residue and correlated with long term insulation resistance tests. Conclusions and proposed standards are discussed.
