PROMENADE - AN ON-LINE PATTERN RECOGNITION SYSTEM.
Abstract
This report describes research on man-computer interaction using, as principal interface, a high-performance CRT screen for computer output and a typewriter-like keyboard for input to the computer. The PROMENADE system is used to perform pattern recognition and has particular interest when the recognition method cannot be well specified. The system helps a user to explore his data by providing a range of multivariate plots for viewing the data and computational algorithms, such as clustering, for numerical analysis. This on-line approach to pattern recognition stresses the use of multivariate plots that allow the user to fly through hyperspace, observing his data. This dynamic approach was not possible before the development of interactive graphics consoles and supporting software. Other features of the system are convenience, flexibility, and quick turn-around time. Also, recording facilities are available via the line printer, still and movie cameras and the off-line plotting table. The memory overlay scheme that has been developed, using a disc for secondary memory, allows rapid access to a very large amount of programs that can be incorporated into the system to improve its usefulness.
