SCHOTTKY BARRIER X-BAND VIDEO DETECTORS FOR HIGH-SENSITIVITY HIGH-BURNOUT APPLICATIONS.

Abstract

The goal of this contract is to develop an X-band detector with both high-sensitivity and high-burnout characteristics. The value of nominal detectable sensitivity which we are looking for is -55 dbm, and the burnout capability should be 500 milliwatts. As has been shown in the last quarterly report, the junction area of Schottky diodes which exhibit sensitivity values as high as that must be very small. As a consequence the heat dissipation is suspected to be insufficient to prevent diodes from burning out. Therefore, basically two problems exist, first, how to achieve reproducibly the required sensitivity, and second, what can be done in order to improve the burnout capability. This report gives a survey of the investigation of these two points. Measurements on a set of 20 test diodes yielded information both on sensitivity and burnout capability.
