PROPERTIES OF THE NORTHERN EDGE OF THE GULF STREAM INFERRED FROM AIRCRAFT OBSERVATIONS.

Abstract

Positions of the northern edge of the Gulf Stream between 65 and 75 deg W were obtained with an airborne infrared radiation thermometer. The data were analyzed to yield a statistical picture of the Gulf Stream. The results show that the Stream has meanders that average 520 km in length and move from west to east at 15 cm/sec. The wavelengths and speeds tend to fit a model in which potential vorticity is conserved. (Author)
