DEVELOPMENT OF L- AND C-BAND SOLID STATE SOURCES.

Abstract

This report covers the work performed under Phase I of a two-task program for advancing the state of the art of efficient, all solid-state, low cost microwave sources. Task I: During Phase I of this task various integration possibilities were investigated to determine the most promising techniques leading to a low cost, integrated L-band radiosonde transistor oscillator. It was concluded that rf-circuits on low loss, high-alumina substrates using channel-mounted transistor pellets were best suited for radiosonde applications. An experimental L-band fundamental frequency transistor oscillator was developed using a microstrip transmission line rf-circuit on a ceramic substrate and a channel-mounted transistor pellet. A power output of 200 mW at a frequency of 1680 MHz was obtained with an efficiency of 12%. A discrete component modulator was developed. This modulator employs an astable multivibrator to switch the oscillator dc voltage and thus permits 100% AM-modulation of the oscillator. The pulse repetition frequency of a 100 + or - 10 microsec pulse could be varied from 68 Hz to 950 Hz by means of resistors simulating the sensor element of the radiosonde. It appears feasible to reproduce this modulator circuit in hybrid integrated circuit form. Task II: The aim of this task is to develop techniques for the fabrication of a C-band, 100 watt, cw all solid state power source. A process for the fabrication of series connected varactor junction arrays was developed. Efficiencies varying from 30% to 60% were achieved in a 1 GHz to 2 GHz frequency multiplier. A solid state C-band power source was constructed and delivered.
