INVESTIGATION OF MAINTENANCE-FREE, HIGH RATE, NICKEL-CADMIUM BATTERIES FOR AIRCRAFT APPLICATION.

Abstract

Charge acceptance of sealed nickel-cadmium cells with polypropylene separator was investigated at -40 F to -10 F. Prototype batteries were assembled and tested to check electrical and mechanical design. Packaging of the charger is discussed. Changes in the charger control circuit to minimize disturbances in the aircraft electrical system are described. Accelerated life testing results of the boost modules are presented. Acceptance Test Procedure for the charger is presented. Preliminary work on the use of microcircuits in the charger is described. Analysis of transient conditions at start and end of battery charging and discharging was made. (Author)
