UPP-66 FAIL-SAFE BALLISTIC PARACHUTE TESTING.

Abstract

Under this program the Stencel UPP-66 Fail-Safe Ballistic Parachute, a ballistically projected and ballistically spread parachute featuring both redundant aerodynamic extraction and aerodynamic spreading, was tested under conditions from zero to approximately 300 knots airspeed. Tests were made in both ballistic and aerodynamic modes including over-the-side bail-out simulations. A number of problem areas were found and subsequently corrected by design modification. The final configuration was found to be reliable from zero to 250 knots air speed. It is believed that further testing will prove the unit to be reliable to 300 knots. It is recommended that the unit be accepted for use in the MODPAC Escape System subsequent to more complete testing. (Author)
