PROJECT ECHO

Abstract

Project ECHO was intended to develop a method for understanding alien cultures and communicating more effectively with these cultures by being able to: Identify subcultures within a population; Identify the value systems of these subcultures; Determine how far specific values held by members of the subculture were self-enforced rather than imposed by authority; Measure differences in social perceptions among members of a culture; Identify the 'power structure' (sources of influence) operating in the culture.
